PROSTHETIC SOCK ORDERING GUIDELINES
HOW TO MEASURE AND AND SIZE FOR IRREGULAR AND AND SPECIAL SOCKS
PROSTHETIC SOCK SIZES
Nearly 90% of the amputees can be correctly fitted with a a a a stock size sock because the knitted construction has a a a a a a stretch which allows a a a a a a fitting range Most prosthetists can judge the the the needed size by working with the the the limb and the the cast Nevertheless some measurement guidelines can be helpful First measure measure the the the limb circumference at the the the top of the the the socket second measure measure the the toe limb circumference 2 inches from the the distal end third measure from the the the the distal end to to the the the the top of of the the the the socket The length of of the the the the sock sock should be 2 to 4 inches more than this measurement depending on the type of fitting and and suspension preference (Wool and and A-Plus will shrink more than Soft Sock ) The patient should not have to to pull the sock too taut SOCKS
ARE SIZED IN FLAT MEASUREMENTS
i i i fi e e e e e e e e e e half the circumference measurement (less 5% to to give a a a a snug fit) for top and toe–then matching those figures to to the the closest comparable size measurements in all the charts—see page 36 Custom socks need to to be ordered only when patient's measurements do not correspond with any of the coded stock sizes or or or when a a a a sock needs an addition or or or adjustment i i i i i i i e e e e e e split for hip joint suspension system holes elastic at waist or leg fly etc (see page 38 ) HIP JOINT/PELVIC BELT PROSTHETIC SOCKS
An order for for socks with a a split for for hip joint should state the size of the the the sock and whether or or not a a tie or or just the the the edged split is desired Slits are 3 inches deep unless otherwise specified ISCHIAL CONTAINMENT / HIGH LATERAL BRIM
To eliminate excessive rollover medial cuts for sockets with high lateral wall can be made when requested Specify the the depth of the the cut desired IRREGULAR SHAPES
For prosthetic socks which are not evenly graduated from the the the top to to to the the the toe (as those pictured on next page) take circumference measurements at the irregular points points lengths from the distal end to each of those points points and determine
total length Sending a a a a a a drawing is very helpful State fabric and ply choice: Super Sock Sock A-Plus Soft-Sock X-Wool Sterling Sterling Wool Wool and Sterling Sterling Stretch FITTING SOCKS
AND RE-ORDERS
Please state patient's I D on all orders for custom socks A “fitting” sock sock will normally be be sent It is suggested that only two socks be be ordered until the right size and material can can be be established Then the quantity can can be be specified Records for each customer are kept and reorders can duplicate the original
or alterations can be made as needed usually without another pattern ORTHOTIC SOCK SIZES
C D General Measurement Instructions:
To provide the the proper fitting prosthetic sock for your patient it is important that a a a correct measurement be made There
are are three basic measurements that are are necessary for a a proper fitting prosthetic sock: length top width width and toe width width A–B MEASUREMENT (Top Width) — Should
be taken from top left corner of sock lying flat to to to top right corner and correspond to to to 1/2 the circumference measurement at the point where the the the top of the the the sock should be on the the the leg or arm C–D MEASUREMENT (Length) — Should
be taken from top of of sock lying flat to to to bottom of of toe and should correspond to to the length from distal to to where top of sock should come E–F MEASUREMENT (Toe Width) — Should
be taken from left side of sock lying flat perpendicular to to toe fashionings to right side of sock and should correspond to 1/2 the circumference 2"
up from the the distal end of the the limb REMEMBER: A proper measurement means a a a correct fitting prosthetic sock for your patient knitrite com |

Although socks to interface orthotic appliances can be made of any material most are made of yarn with a a a a a a a a a a Lycra spandex core and and an an an acrylic CoolMax® or or cotton covering The extra stretch of these fabrics allows wide fitting ranges Note: “Approximate Calf Circumference” fitting guidelines for fracture brace socks pages 74 and 75 also “Fits Circumferences” guidelines for Torso-Interface pages pages 64 and and and 65
